Major Trauma CPD for Ambulance Clinicians

The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) Major Trauma Team have compiled a major trauma CPD session aimed at paramedics and technicians. Sessions are presented as both face-to-face training and as an online course, with the aim of reaching as many ambulance clinicians as possible.

Consultant Paramedic for Major Trauma, Martin Esposito said,

“Our paramedics and technicians are attending an increasingly wide range of emergency calls. Major trauma can be quite rare for individual ambulance clinicians, but it’s vital they are able to care for and manage major trauma patients when it happens. Therefore, we’re keen to support all our clinicians to maintain their skills”

The sessions are based on a simulated accident and focus. on three key topics;

  • Identification of major trauma
  • Care provided at the scene
  • Triage to the most appropriate hospital.

The session includes themes highlighted from feedback, case reviews as well as published literature, such as the importance of communication, the timely administration of specific trauma interventions, inequalities in major trauma care and on-scene times.

Additionally, the sessions provide an opportunity for ambulance clinicians to come together and learn collaboratively through shared experience. They also provide the opportunity for the major trauma team to listen to the views of paramedics and technicians so that they can then be supported to provide the best possible care.

Major trauma CPD sessions will continue throughout 2025 and will supplement other training and education that SAS clinicians receive.
